Main photo: an overwater villa at Vakkaru Maldives ![]() I visited the resort with my mum and was pleased to find that it had an even split between couples and families with lots of touches for little ones, be it pirate ship cruises run by the kids’ club or dedicated sections for mini treats in the breakfast buffet. It’s also not a resort that - unlike lots in the Maldives - is geared primarily towards honeymooners. ![]() I’ve been lucky enough to snorkel in lots of places and can confidently say you’d struggle to beat the variety of sea life at Vakkaru. The teeming house reef is a Unesco biosphere reserve where guests can swim with a rainbow of tropical fish, turtles, sharks and, if it’s between May and October, rays. There’s not another island in sight - rare for the Maldives - and its setting is so striking that Elizabeth Hurley chose it as the spot to shoot her latest bikini range (Madonna has also holidayed here). The luxury is the service - waiters remembering what type of yoghurt you like with your breakfast - and the privacy the clever design behind each villa means it would be easy to spend a week here and not see another guest. The location is a former coconut plantation, which has retained its wild side with thousands of coconut trees and villas in a well-tamed jungle, laced with sandy paths to stylish bars and low-key restaurants. Two things that can set a resort apart is their level of luxury and location - and high-end Vakkaru nails both. Most resorts share similar names - “fushi” and “doo” appear in almost all - and look identical: neat rows of thatched overwater villas. Points of interest : great night dives, beautiful orange and yellow soft corals, big overhangs, nudibranchs, macro photography. It’s not easy nailing where to stay in the Maldives. Lots of overhangs line the north-side of this reef. Ideally dived with a light medium current, in order to see the soft corals open. Milaidhoo’s house reef offers some interesting overhangs, which are nicely covered with red-orange-yellow soft corals. Diving in Baa Atoll © Milaidhoo Maldives MILAIDHOO WALL Points of interest : big overhangs- pelagic fish, nurse sharks, soft corals, scorpion fish, octopus, schools of banner fish and bat fish. The top of the reef reaches up to 4 meters. On the West End of the reef there is a cross-over to the main reef, which is covered with yellow soft corals, and in the deeper overhangs are often Nurse Sharks or a Sting Ray having their daily nap. On the East Side of the reef you can see Eagle rays. ![]() & personal counsellor in Maldives KAKKA THILA
